Foster dog available for adoption!

Post by spierson » Thu Jun 20, 2024 8:58 am

Hi everyone,

If you or someone you know is looking to adopt a dog and this seems like a good fit, please reach out! We have a five year old German Shorthaired Pointer in a foster home in the Mazama area looking for his forever home.

He was surrendered at a high-risk shelter in Hermiston, OR for unknown reasons, and is currently in a foster home until we find him a permanent home.

He is, as mentioned, a five y/o neutered male GSP. He is 72 lbs, off-leash trained, does not have hunting training and would not be a great hunting dog, but would be the perfect companion for an active person, family, or couple. He does very well off-leash on gravel and mtn bike rides and runs, and LOVES to play fetch at the river for hours. He has about 90% successful recall rates when getting him to come to our side without e-collar correction, which we are working on improving with e-collar and long lead training.

He loves the water, and will jump/lounge/wade in creeks and rivers whenever he gets the chance. He likes to run alongside his human off-leash on all mountain-related adventures and tires out around the eight mile mark. He needs to go to a family that will run, bike and/or walk him on a daily basis. As a GSP, he has lots of energy! Once you tire him out, however, he is able to decompress at home and will nap on the couch or gnaw at his bone quietly. He will also play with his own toys when his humans are busy and keep himself occupied.

He is able to be left at home for a work day without a kennel and is not destructive--he just naps. Though he is roughly kennel trained, and will go to his kennel when asked without whining. He'll sometimes even voluntarily hop in there and take a nap.

He is good with other dogs and loves to play outside, chase, run, etc. He would be best with other dogs 30lb and above, as he is quite the big dog. He has hung out with small dogs and is not aggressive or unintentionally harmful, though he doesn't seem as interested in playing with them as he does with bigger dogs. We have not had him around kids, though I suspect he would be very gentle. Unsure about cats and chickens.

Other things:
-does great with passers-by on off-leash walks, often will ignore them or say a gentle hello
-good with visitors but will bark as they approach the home
-pulls a bit while walking on leash
-fully house trained
-fully vaccinated, neutered, microchipped
-knows basic commands

Big couch cuddler, toy lover, fetch connoisseur, trail runner, all around good boy.

Please reach out if interested!
