QUILTS today at the Shafer Museum & MAKE your own block!

Post by ShaferMuseum » Sat Jun 08, 2024 9:34 am

This afternoon 1-4:00 pm, on the lawn at the Shafer Museum
Drop by for a hands-on traditional quilting bee open to all visitors. Local quilters have a quilt frame set up on the museum lawn with a quilt ready to hand stitch. You can create your own quilt blocks by hand stitching, or try using one of the museum's vintage treadle sewing machines. NO experience needed- this is to give it a try, for kids and adults alike.
Many traditional quilts are on display. FREE, donations welcome. Thanks to our local quilters for volunteering their knowledge!

This is the first of six handwork sessions to be offered on select Saturdays throughout the summer in conjunction with the museum’s new pioneer women's handwork exhibit.

Coming up:

Spinning and Carding - June 22, 1-4pm -
Spinning using a traditional wheel and carding will be demonstrated - see the process of changing raw wool fleece into yarn.

Crocheting/Tatting - July 13, 1-4pm
Local crocheters will demonstrate a variety of stitches and crochet patterns. Try finger crocheting (using your fingers instead of a hook) to create a long rope of crochet -Ultimately this piece could be expanded into a small rug!

Embroidery - July 2, 1-4pm
Demonstration of basic embroidery stitches. Instructors will provide participants with a small printed pattern for "red work" (stitching with red thread on white fabric) and learn the running stitch.

Weaving - August 3, 1-4pm
Two weavers at two looms will demonstrate how woven fabrics can be created on 4-shaft table looms. You can even weave a few inches of the towel or scarf they are making! Young kids can try potholder looms for a take-home craft.

Knitting - August 17, 1-4pm
Learn to knit with "coaches" from our local knitting groups. Needles/yarns provided to borrow or bring your own.
