NORTH CASCADES HIGHWAY REOPENS
North Cascades Highway reopened at noon today (Aug. 22), the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced.
The section of State Route 20 between mileposts 148 and 157 had been closed since Aug. 4 due to increased activity on the Easy Fire, started by lightning on July 17.
A mudslide following a rainstorm on Aug. 11 needed to be cleared before the highway could reopen. Crews removed about 7,000 tons of mud, boulders and other debris from the highway.
Travelers on North Cascades Highway should remain alert for fire crews working along the highway. The posted speed limit is 35 mph between mileposts 150 and 154.
A pilot car will direct traffic over this four-mile stretch beginning at 7 a.m. Monday (Aug. 26). The highway will remain open during overnight hours without a pilot car.
Up-to-the-minute information about highway closures is available on the WSDOT website at wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/.
